If I Can Clean It Up,I'm Good(will) With It

Our town has a "new" Goodwill. It is literaly across the street from where it was before. It's cleaner, brighter, and just smells better. (my sniffer works well) We live in town now, so I can take a minute out of my day and run in to see whats new. I'm all about a bargin. I have NO problem buying something used, second hand, third of fourth hand for that matter. If I can clean it up (no surprise to you right), and use it, I'm good(will) with it.

I just don't understand who prices the things that come into their store. Sometimes heads whip around in my direction because I can be heard saying, "Are You Serious!"

Now I'm not talking to anyone imparticular. Just myself. (yes, I do that too), but really. $39.oo for very damaged, fake wood bench that I wouldn't pay more than $5.oo for at a lawn sale. And that was one of the many, many, many, over priced items I saw this morning.

Rev. Edgar Helms (founder)Please don't get me wrong. I really do love G.W. I appreciate the history behind the industry, and am glad they employ many who otherwise would not have a job.

But, SERIOUSLY, get with the pricing program folks. Why would anyone purchase something very used at a price they could by it new at Wal-Mart? It's Goodwill remember?

I didn't leave G.W. empty handed. Even after all my complaining. See that cute laundry hamper at the top of the post. Yeah, Goodwill.

Hugs from Maine

Very cute. I'm with you. Whenever I go into someplace that has second hand things or even a garage sale, I feel the need to remind the people working there that "This is the second hand place...USED stuff, right?" What's up with that??? Good post. Link it to Goodwill, see what they say!!!

I does seem like they would have a better system for pricing. I've noticed the crazy tags on some things.

I fixed it! I was the first one to subscribe and it only shows 18 followers...now you have 19, so I was no longer showing up! Anyway, I un-followed and followed again, so there I am!! And, I totally agree with the Goodwill thing! Where did they move? Where is TJ Max? It's amazing how much new business is there in just 2 years!

My aunt used to work for them and she said some things that disturbed me such as: the employees get first dibs on everything that comes in..and the employees decide what the price will be based on their own (sometimes faulty) logic..also, only about ten percent of the profits actually go to charity...don't know for sure if that's true but if it is that's pretty sad.

oh, and I love the black damask laundry hamper. I would have bought that, too!

I love Goodwill! But yes, I have been known not to buy something bc the price was too high. I think sometimes they mark the price up just bc they think it's valuable.

Love the hamper!

Hi, Lisa,

I saw you said that you don't know how to make a link, so I thought I'd try to explain how to you. Hope I make it understandable. This is just the order I use. You may find an easier way.

Got to the page where you compose a new post. See all those little icons above the text box? You want the one to the left of the "text color" icon. I always think that it looks like a staple, but it's really a chain link over the earth. Anyway, highlight the text you want to link with. For example, highlight the word 'Nester'. Click on the link icon. A box will appear that says "enter URL". You type in the address you want to link to... The way I do this is to go to the Nester site. Highlight the web address in the window. Click ctrl + C to copy the address. Go back to your post page. Paste that post address in the URL box. You should be all set. If you want to link to a particular post instead of the whole blog--click on the title of the post. This will bring you to a page for just that post. Copy and paste that web address and put that in the URL box.

I hope this makes sense. Good luck. If it doesn't make sense to you, try going here:

Hi, I found your post through "Enchanted Cottage",,,I live in Maine too and am new to blogging.. i love your recent post on Goodwill.. I was there yesterday too and felt the same way. I have a hard time paying all those 4.99 prices, when they really could be at a cheaper price. And I saw a cake stand yesterday for ,,, 24.99!! I found one in an antique store for 12.99 and it was prettier and more detailed... I'll be back.. blessings to you.

Good Morning Lisa.....I see you have met my sister in Sabattus, Tracey. We both posted there just a few minutes apart. She's a hoot! I agree with you and Goodwill. What are those folks thinking when they price those items? THey must be in la la land. The thrift store in my town, small that it may be, charges $1.00 for clothing. Books are 10 cents, it's a real deal going there. I love Good will, too, and they do great work, but come on, let's get serious. LOve your laundry hamper, so chic! I can't wait for yard sales to start, Have a great Friday! Hugs, XO Kathleen

(sigh) I have to take a trip to Goodwill soon. Not to buy, but to drop off. I suppose that would require actually sorting and cleaning things first--which I have only 3 weeks left to do before moving! ahh!

Good old Goodwill :)

I am right there with you about Goodwill! Ours can be way overpriced...ours gets a lot of damaged stuff from target, and they must think it is gold cause they price it out of this world. Like I am going to pay that when it is either damaged or missing a piece, but if it was a few bucks I might take a chance. It's silly how it all piles up, I keep thinking they can't keep it forever, maybe they'll just sell it all for a few bucks one day to get rid of it..hope I am there that day! (-:

Hey, thanks for coming by my blog. I read through yours for a while and really enjoyed it! I am a little jealous of the snow, although I am sure you are over it by now. Great to "meet" you.
